US and Brazil propose new Venezuela election, opposition rejects

President Joe Biden announced his support for a new election in Venezuela, backing Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva’s proposal in response to the disputed July 28th election results. Lula suggested a new contest with international observers as a solution to the political crisis, which both the ruling party and the opposition reject.

The U.S. rejected Maduro’s claim of victory and called for a new election, along with other global voices. Lula proposed a “coalition government” or new elections with a nonpartisan committee for Venezuela. However, opposition leader Maria Corina Machado dismissed the idea, insisting the 2022 election stand.

With no support from Maduro or his opponents, Western nations have not taken strong action against the alleged voting fraud. Lula and Colombian President Gustavo Petro discussed potential solutions for Venezuela, including temp power-sharing between ruling party and opposition.

The upcoming Latin American leaders’ meeting will address the crisis, with Brazil’s stance under scrutiny. Lula’s foreign policy advisor denied a formal call for new elections, and conservative senators questioned Brazil’s support for Maduro versus jailed opposition members.
