Monkeypox Outbreak Creates Global Emergency

A recent surge in mpox cases in Africa has prompted the World Health Organisation to declare a public health emergency, with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control warning of potential imported cases spreading to Europe. The Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention also declared a Public Health Emergency of Continental Security for the first time in response to the deadly disease.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is a highly infectious disease with two subtypes: clade 1 and clade 2. The recent surge includes the more deadly clade 1b variant, which has spread internationally, affecting young adults and even children through various modes of transmission.

While vaccines have been effective in controlling previous outbreaks in Europe and North America, African countries are facing challenges in accessing these crucial preventive measures. Efforts are being made to distribute vaccines to affected regions, but more support is needed to contain the epidemic.

The global community must come together to address the escalating crisis and prevent further spread of this dangerous virus.
