Ukraine’s medical cannabis legalization now in effect

The legalization of medical cannabis in Ukraine came into effect on Aug. 16, allowing veterans with PTSD and individuals with serious illnesses like cancer to access the drug. President Volodymyr Zelensky signed the law on Feb. 15, 2024, after it was approved by the parliament in December 2023. Zelensky had previously expressed support for medical cannabis legalization in his address to parliament on June 28, 2023.

While recreational cannabis distribution remains prohibited, the government will closely regulate the sale and distribution of medical cannabis. Only patients with a valid prescription from a doctor can purchase the drug legally. The law permits the cultivation of hemp for medical, industrial, and scientific purposes to improve patient access to necessary treatments for conditions like cancer and PTSD, which may affect around 30% of soldiers and veterans in Ukraine.

Additionally, discussions are underway between Ukraine and the U.S. about the supply of long-range cruise missiles, as reported by a source close to Zelensky’s administration. The development of these initiatives indicates progress in addressing healthcare and security concerns in Ukraine.
