Turkey and Iraq have taken a significant step towards enhancing cooperation in security, military, and counterterrorism efforts. A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the defense ministers of both nations following the 4th meeting of the Turkey-Iraq High-Level Security Mechanism in Ankara.
During a joint news conference, Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan highlighted the progress made in combating the PKK terror group in Iraq. The MoU, long in negotiations, outlines plans for joint coordination and training centers to further elevate cooperation.
Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein acknowledged the historic nature of the security MoU, emphasizing the ban on the PKK in Iraq. Plans for joint security coordination and training centers in Baghdad and Bashika will strengthen the fight against terrorism.
Additionally, Turkey and Iraq have agreed on visa exemptions for Iraqi citizens between the ages of 15 and 50, showing continued cooperation and solidarity in various areas of mutual interest.
