After 13 years since his first crime, Thapelo Malatji, a 45-year-old serial rapist from Soweto, has been sentenced to two consecutive life terms. He appeared in the Protea Regional Court for a string of crimes in Dobsonville since 2011, which included aggravated robbery.
Malatji’s pattern involved robbing victims at gunpoint, taking them to secluded locations, and repeatedly raping them. One victim was not only assaulted but also robbed of valuable items like a laptop, cash, a cellphone, and more, as confirmed by National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Phindi Mjonondwane.
Initially arrested for theft in North West, further investigation linked Malatji to multiple cases in Soweto. He was taken into custody in July 2020, facing numerous charges. In addition to the life sentences for rape, he was also sentenced to 30 years each for aggravated robbery and kidnapping offenses.
