Man charged with wife’s unsolved murder gets bail

Man Accused of Murdering Wife Granted Bail After 26 Years

After spending one night behind bars, a Sydney man accused of violently murdering his wife 26 years ago and inventing a false home invasion story to hide his crime has been released on bail. Aaron Govendir’s tale of a fake home invasion in 1998, where he claimed an unknown man killed his wife Denise, was debunked by police, leading to his recent arrest.

In March 1998, Aaron Govendir told police he was knocked unconscious by an unknown man who entered their Dover Heights home (Nine)

Govendir, now 81, appeared in court where his release was successfully argued by his barrister due to his age and health. Despite opposing views on the strength of the case, Govendir was granted bail with strict conditions.

Police claim the entire story was fabricated to cover up the now 81-year-old’s involvement in the killing. (NSW Police)

The tragic murder of Denise Govendir resurfaced in 2021, leading to Govendir’s arrest and the revelation of a staged robbery to hide the crime. An ongoing investigation is underway following the NSW government’s announcement of a $1 million reward for information on her killer.
