Kindergarten teacher jailed for sexual abuse of children

A kindergarten teacher in Taiwan has been sentenced to 28 years in jail for over 200 sexual offenses against children. The Taipei District Court judge described the crimes as “vicious” and causing “severe physical and mental trauma” to six children under seven years old.

The case sparked widespread anger on the island due to the scale of the crimes and the initial mishandling by authorities. The teacher, named Mao, was not suspended after an initial report in 2022, potentially allowing more children to become victims. He was arrested in July 2023 after more parents filed complaints.

Despite complaints about transparency during the investigation, Mao was eventually suspended, and the kindergarten’s license was revoked. He was convicted of various crimes, including rape and producing sexually explicit videos of children. Investigations are ongoing into additional allegations.

The public was horrified by the details of the case, which only came to light after parents reported Mao to the police. The full extent of his crimes was revealed when authorities confiscated his phone, uncovering over 600 private videos of children. Taipei’s Mayor apologized to the public for the handling of the case.
