J&K Awaits Statehood as Centre Boosts LG’s Powers: Cong

Congress general secretary in-charge communications Jairam Ramesh said, ”For the past five years, the Indian National Congress has been consistently demanding that full statehood should be restored to J&K and that assembly elections should be conducted. J&K still awaits full statehood”

Noting that Jammu and Kashmir still awaits full statehood, the Congress alleged recent moves by the Union government have only added to the powers of the Lieutenant Governor, “making a mockery of the powers of a duly elected state government.” The Election Commission announced that assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in three phases from September 18.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh emphasized the party’s demand for full statehood restoration in J&K. The last assembly elections there were in 2014, making the upcoming elections significant post the abrogation of Article 370 in 2019.

The recent amendments granting more powers to the Lieutenant Governor sparked criticism, with decisions on police, IAS and IPS officers, and anti-corruption measures now under the LG’s jurisdiction. These changes were made under the J&K Reorganisation Act, 2019, after the state was bifurcated into Union Territories.

The upcoming elections and the ongoing power dynamics in Jammu and Kashmir highlight the complex political landscape in the region.
