Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman’s Fear of Assassination over Saudi-Israeli Ties
Saudi crown prince Mohammed Bin Salman has expressed his fear of being assassinated due to his support for normalizing Saudi-Israeli ties. This move is seen as a strategic diplomatic tactic to secure a deal that Riyadh is comfortable with, according to a report by Politico.
Bin Salman reportedly shared his concerns with members of the US Congress, citing the assassination of Anwar Sadat after he signed a peace deal with Israel in the 1980s. He emphasized the importance of any deal including a genuine path to a Palestinian state, especially in light of heightened Arab resentment towards Tel Aviv following the recent conflict in Gaza.
The potential agreement between Saudi Arabia and the US involves security guarantees, aid for a civilian nuclear program, and economic investments in technology. In return, Saudi Arabia would limit its relations with China and establish diplomatic ties with Israel.
However, the Israeli government’s reluctance to include a credible path to a Palestinian state in the pact has disappointed Bin Salman. Despite this challenge, the report describes the Saudi prince’s efforts as a “clever diplomatic marketing strategy.”
