The Gauteng High Court in Pretoria has granted VBS heist accused Danny Msiza and Kabelo Matsepe’s application to have their trials separated from that of their co-accused. However, the court denied their request for a temporary stay of prosecution. The National Prosecuting Authority expressed disappointment, citing stretched resources and the need for witnesses to testify twice. The NPA plans to appeal the ruling.
The accused face charges of theft, fraud, money laundering, corruption, racketeering, and contraventions of organized crime and corruption acts, alleging the looting of R2 billion from VBS Mutual Bank between 2015 and 2018. Former VBS chair Tshifhiwa Matodzi recently agreed to a plea deal as a State witness.
The case continues with Msiza, Matsepe, and 11 others on September 9. Previous accused in the case have received sentences, indicating progress in the legal process regarding the VBS heist.
