In a recent development, Hamas representatives revealed that negotiations in Qatar have strayed from U.S. President Joe Biden’s proposal. The group has expressed support for the U.N.’s request for a humanitarian pause to administer polio vaccinations to Palestinian children.
Senior Hamas official Mahmoud Mardawi shared that the leadership has been briefed on the discussions in Doha, emphasizing discrepancies between the current proposals and those put forth by Biden earlier in the year. Despite not being directly involved in the talks, Hamas had previously stated their unwillingness to accept any deviations from Biden’s peace framework.
Hamas is steadfast in its belief that the negotiations must prioritize ending the conflict, withdrawing Israeli forces from Gaza, facilitating the return of displaced individuals, initiating reconstruction efforts, and lifting the Israeli blockade.
Further talks are scheduled to take place in Cairo next week, with Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. serving as mediators. Among Israel’s new conditions are the retention of troops along the Gaza-Egypt border, contrasting Hamas’ calls for a comprehensive ceasefire and prisoner exchange without limitations.
Notably, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant engaged in discussions with U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, stressing the importance of securing the release of hostages in Gaza. Additionally, Hamas voiced their endorsement for a brief humanitarian pause to vaccinate Palestinian children against polio.
