The U.S. Representative to the United Nations is pushing for South Sudanese leaders to conduct free and fair elections to end the lengthy transitional period since the country’s independence. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the need for peace, security, and freedom for the people of South Sudan during a briefing with the UN Security Council. She urged dialogue among leaders to bring the transitional period to a peaceful conclusion through legitimate elections.
Amb. Thomas-Greenfield commended initiatives like the Kenyan-led Tumaini Initiative for mediating talks and called on regional and international partners to support this effort. She also highlighted the importance of transparent and inclusive electoral processes and voiced concern over provisions in the National Security Service Act that could threaten political and civic freedoms.
The Ambassador expressed alarm over imposed taxes impacting humanitarian operations and food insecurity in the country. She called on the government to establish exemptions for UN, humanitarian, and diplomatic missions to aid those in need. Additionally, she urged the protection of civilians amidst escalating violence and emphasized the choice for peace and prosperity over fear and desperation. South Sudan stands at a critical crossroads, and the transitional government’s decisions are pivotal for its future.
