The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has lifted the suspension of mining activities in the South Kivu province, except for gold extraction, as stated by the region’s governor. The province is known for mining gold, tin ore cassiterite, and hi-tech mineral coltan through artisanal means.
DRC’s gold production is often underreported, with significant amounts being smuggled into global supply chains via neighboring countries. Governor Jean-Jacques Purusi Sadiki had previously suspended all mining activities due to disorder caused by mining operators.
Following a meeting with operators, the suspension has been lifted. The government urges mining entities to resolve tax matters and assures ongoing consultations within the industry for stability and economic development in South Kivu. The goal is to transform the mining sector into a key contributor to prosperity in the region.
