Government backs bill to ban use of Russian software

The Ukrainian government has taken a significant step in enhancing digital security by approving a ban on software and websites from Russia and other sanctioned countries. This move, aimed at safeguarding national security, prohibits Ukrainian companies from using programs developed in Russia or by affiliated companies. Additionally, websites posing threats to national security will be blocked.

Since 2017, Ukraine has already been blocking popular Russian platforms like VKontakte, Mail.ru, and Yandex. The new draft law introduces stricter sanctions and extends the ban to software developed by individuals or companies from sanctioned states. It also proposes blocking access to websites owned by sanctioned individuals or organizations.

Amidst increased cyberattacks from Russia, Ukraine’s Security Service is actively gathering evidence on Russian intelligence hackers. Notably, the International Criminal Court (ICC) will receive materials related to last December’s attack on Kyivstar, Ukraine’s leading telecommunications provider.

This legislation underscores Ukraine’s commitment to digital security and resilience against cyber threats. As the draft law awaits approval by the parliament, Ukraine continues to fortify its defenses against malicious cyber activities for the safety and integrity of its digital ecosystem.
