The White House has announced that discussions for a cease-fire and hostage deal between Hamas and Israel will resume in Cairo next week after the U.S. proposed a “bridging proposal” to finalize the agreement. CIA Director William Burns represented Washington during two days of serious and constructive talks in Doha, offering ideas to end the 10-month conflict.
The White House statement, co-signed by mediators Qatar and Egypt, mentioned that the proposal aims to build on areas of agreement and bridge remaining gaps for a swift implementation of the deal. Senior officials will reconvene in Cairo before the end of next week to finalize the terms.
President Joe Biden, along with leaders of Qatar and Egypt, emphasized the urgency to release hostages, initiate a cease-fire, and implement the agreement. Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty highlighted the significance of a Gaza cease-fire in preventing the region from escalating into all-out war.
