Pakistan announced a confirmed case of mpox, following Sweden’s first infection outside Africa with a new, more dangerous strain. The virus has caused havoc in African countries, leading the World Health Organisation to declare a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. Sweden registered a case of the Clade 1b subclade, the same strain as the DRC outbreak.

In Pakistan, a 34-year-old man was diagnosed with mpox after visiting a Gulf country. The Ministry of Health is working to determine the specific strain with genetic sequencing. Additionally, the WHO warned of potential importation of the new strain in Europe and stressed against stigmatizing travellers.

China announced screening measures for mpox, while the DRC reported nearly 16,000 potential cases and 548 deaths this year. The US pledged vaccine doses, and Danish drugmaker Bavarian Nordic prepared to produce more.

Mpox, formerly known as monkeypox, is transmitted through infected animals and close contact between humans, causing fever, aches, and skin lesions. It poses a global threat, emphasizing the importance of vaccination and disease control efforts.
