The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and the Nordic countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, and Sweden recently reinforced their commitment to diplomatic ties and regional collaboration. The foreign ministers of the Nordic countries visited the ECOWAS headquarters in Abuja to emphasize their partnership.

Vice-Chair of the ECOWAS Commission, Ms. Damtien Tchintchibidja, praised the Nordic countries for their contributions to various ECOWAS initiatives. These include peace and security programs, early warning systems, maritime safety, climate change adaptation, and water resource management, with financial and technical support from Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden.

Tchintchibidja expressed the commission’s eagerness to enhance diplomatic ties with the Nordic countries, seeking annual reviews of collaboration efforts. The Nordic foreign ministers affirmed their commitment to boosting relations with ECOWAS, focusing on economic integration and stability in West Africa during their historic visit to Nigeria.

The talks centered on mutual interests such as security, economic cooperation, education, trade, investment, and the rule of law. The meeting highlighted the shared commitment to strengthening ties between ECOWAS and the Nordic countries for future cooperation and progress.
