Croatia is set to reintroduce a two-month compulsory military service starting on January 1 next year, as announced by Defense Minister Ivan Anusic. This decision comes amidst increased tensions in Europe due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and a rise in military activities in the Balkans. The move marks a shift back to conscription after the country had moved to a volunteer-based system in 2008.
In a statement to Croatian broadcaster RTL, Minister Anusic emphasized the government’s commitment to increasing the salaries and benefits of military personnel while also focusing on the modernization and equipment of the Armed Forces in alignment with NATO standards and agreements with allies.
This decision reflects Croatia’s dedication to strengthening its defense capabilities and ensuring national security in a changing geopolitical landscape. With the reintroduction of compulsory military service, Croatia aims to enhance its readiness and response capabilities to address regional and global security challenges.
