The Mysterious Presence of Ugandan Forces in South Sudan: A Cause for Concern
The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) has raised concerns about the recent sightings of the Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) in Raja County, Western Bahr el Ghazal State in South Sudan. The presence of foreign soldiers and their armored vehicles has sparked questions among the citizens, as it comes at a time when the nation is enjoying relative peace after the signing of the 2018 peace agreement.
CEPO state coordinator Stephen Robo Musa expressed his surprise at the sight of UPDF soldiers in Raja and their daily activities in the area. The lack of communication from the authorities regarding the presence of foreign forces has left the community wondering about the intentions behind their deployment.
Despite denials from the South Sudanese military spokesperson, Major General Lul Ruai Koang, about knowledge of UPDF presence, the activist highlighted the need for transparency from the government to address the concerns of the citizens. The situation raises eyebrows as it coincides with previous border disputes between Uganda and South Sudan.
