Authorities in the Greater Pibor Administrative Area (GPAA) have successfully recovered eleven children abducted from Eastern Equatoria State, with the help of local chiefs. The ongoing issue of abductions by suspected Murle youth has led the two jurisdictions to collaborate in order to end these incidents and bring the children back to safety. While not all children have been found, both governments are committed to continuing their search efforts.
The GPAA Information Minister, Oleyo Akuar Nyalus, confirmed that the recovered children, 5 females and 6 males, have been handed over to the UN. The Minister of Gender, Child, and Social Welfare of Eastern Equatoria State, Jennifer Nabongorika, highlighted the importance of the collaboration between the two regions in ensuring the safe return of the abducted children.
Women’s activist Eunice Nakiru commended the GPAA leadership for their efforts but urged for the deployment of security forces to locate the remaining kidnapped children. The commitment to peace and unity between neighboring states is emphasized by the government officials involved.
