Japan Donates $3.19 Million in Food Assistance to South Sudan Through WFP
The Government of Japan, represented by Ambassador Odagiri Toshio, has generously donated $3.19 million in food assistance to the UN World Food Program (WFP) in South Sudan. The donation aims to address the dire humanitarian situation in the country, exacerbated by food insecurity, refugee influx, and impending floods.
The assistance, in the form of 1,150 metric tons of Japanese rice, will benefit over 61,350 people, including school children who will receive meals for three months. WFP Country Director Mary-Ellen McGroarty emphasized the significance of this donation in providing much-needed aid to vulnerable populations affected by conflict, flooding, and food insecurity.
The contribution from Japan will also support school feeding programs, ensuring children remain in school and receive vital nutrition. Minister Albino Akol Atak highlighted the immense humanitarian need in South Sudan, with over 7 million people requiring assistance due to economic crises stemming from climate change and the conflict in Sudan.
This timely donation will help address pressing needs and support the development of South Sudan’s human capital through education and food security initiatives.
