Minister of Energy German Galushchenko of Ukraine recently met with representatives of the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association (WENRA) to discuss urgent issues of energy security in the field of nuclear energy. Galushchenko highlighted the strategic importance of further developing Ukraine’s nuclear industry, especially in the face of unprecedented attacks from a terrorist state. WENRA members, including officials from the UK and Finland, expressed their support for Ukraine’s energy independence and the completion of power units at the Khmelnytsky NPP.
The meeting also touched on potential cooperation in energy security, assistance with modern equipment for Ukrainian nuclear power plants, and the transfer of cutting-edge technology to enhance Ukraine’s nuclear industry. WENRA, a leading organization in establishing nuclear and radiation safety standards, emphasized its readiness to provide support based on experiences from other countries.
These discussions come on the heels of Ukraine’s approval to complete power units 3 and 4 at the Khmelnytskyi NPP, a project that holds promise for the country’s energy future. The ongoing dialogue between Ukraine and WENRA signifies a significant step towards enhancing nuclear energy capabilities and ensuring the country’s energy independence.
