The U.S. special envoy for Sudan is pushing for progress in talks to end the ongoing war, despite the absence of the Sudanese government. Since April 2023, conflict has persisted between the Sudanese army led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the RSF under Mohamed Hamdan Daglo.
The RSF is participating in U.S.-brokered talks for a cease-fire, while the SAF is not satisfied with the negotiation format and is not involved. The talks, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and Switzerland, aim to establish a cease-fire, enhance humanitarian access, and create enforcement mechanisms.
With the African Union, Egypt, the UAE, and the UN involved, these discussions come after previous unsuccessful talks in Jeddah. The conflict has led to severe humanitarian crises, with over half the population facing hunger and many displaced and deceased. Despite Sudan’s opposition, the U.S. and its partners are working tirelessly to achieve tangible results and save lives.
