Snakebite cases have surged in Warrap State due to flooding, forcing humans and reptiles to seek dry land. Since June, seven deaths and over 78 survivors have been recorded in Twic, Tonj South, and Kuajok Main Hospital. Health Director Andrea Achuil appeals for antivenoms, as deaths and survivors from snakebites continue to rise.
In addition, 57 cases of dog bites have been reported, with a shortage of rabies vaccines. Doctor Wol Wol of Tonj South County emphasizes the lack of antivenoms in health facilities, urging government and health partners to intervene to make the medicine more accessible.
Precautionary measures include cutting grass around homes, using torches at night, and wearing gumboots. John Akol Akol, Warrap State health surveillance officer, attributes the rise in snakebites to the rainy season, with Mayen Abun Hospital recording 30 cases and Kuajok Main Hospital recording 37 cases.
