Sudanese arm themselves as army fails to protect civilians.

Amid escalating conflict in Sudan, grassroots movements are organizing self-defence against the RSF, as international efforts to contain the violence have faltered, leaving civilians vulnerable. The RSF’s brutal actions and perceived SAF inadequacy have fueled the rise of independent self-defence initiatives. While SAF calls for a resistance under its command, many distrust its ability to protect them, with concerns of potential civil war escalation.

Despite warnings of worsening the situation, self-defence efforts have emerged across regions like Darfur and Kordofan, reflecting communities’ determination to protect themselves. The Middle Call coalition has been formed in central Sudan, aiming to expel the RSF and resist external influence targeting their resource-rich region. However, cracks within SAF-controlled groups, like a notable defection in River Nile State, reveal rifts and internal tensions.
