Russian Academy of Sciences Hosts Student Tour

Gravity, Isolation and Weightlessness Simulation: Russian Academy of Sciences Tours Students

The Institute of Biomedical Problems (IMBP) at the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) recently hosted a tour for students, shedding light on the effects of weightlessness on the human body and the concept of artificial gravity. The tour, organized by the “Scientific Russia” portal as part of the “Science and Universities” national project, aimed to educate participants about space medicine and isolation research.

The tour included details about the SIRIUS-23 isolation experiment, where participants simulate a year-long lunar mission to study the impact of long-term isolation on human behavior. Scientists at IMBP also showcased the “Dry Immersion” stand, a weightlessness simulation model used to understand how the body reacts in a non-supporting space.

Additionally, the institute conducts experiments like short-radius centrifugation (SRC) to create artificial gravity in space. These initiatives serve not only to advance space research but also have practical applications in fields like cosmetology and rehabilitation.

“We are studying new psychological techniques, for example, relaxation techniques, including by using virtual reality (VR) systems,” said Victoria Kirichenko, a surgeon and junior researcher at IMBP.
