Prasa board dismisses Matthews, pays out contract

The news of Zolani Matthews being fired by the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa) for the third time has caused quite a stir. Just days after a labour court ruling in his favor, Matthews found himself without a job once again.

Prasa’s board cited non-performance as the reason for his termination, emphasizing the agency’s focus on reopening rail corridors and refurbishing stations for the benefit of all passengers. This decision comes after a previous dismissal in 2021 due to dual citizenship, which was later ruled as not being a breach.

Despite attempts to reach an amicable agreement with Matthews, the board found it necessary to terminate his contract, paying out the remainder of his dues. Prasa remains committed to improving the rail service in South Africa and delivering on its core mandate of safe and cost-effective transportation.

The board expressed confidence in the management team and assured passengers and stakeholders of Prasa’s dedication to meeting expectations and overcoming challenges. With investments in new projects and modernization efforts, Prasa is poised for a successful future.
