Emergency Situation: Mpox Outbreak in Congo

Keren Habimana, residing in a camp for internally displaced people in Congo’s North Kivu province, was forced to flee her home due to rising conflict in the region. The recent attack by rebels from the M23 group led to a surge in tensions, prompting locals to seek refuge in makeshift camps.

Amid the conflict, Habimana faced another challenge as all her children contracted mpox, a highly contagious disease causing flu-like symptoms and skin lesions. With limited access to medical treatment and vaccines shortage, she struggled to secure adequate care for her family.

The World Health Organization declared the spread of mpox a global public health emergency, urging international cooperation to contain the virus’s rapid transmission across borders. Lack of public awareness, access to clean water, and hygiene facilities in overcrowded camps have exacerbated the outbreak in North Kivu.

Local health authorities emphasize early intervention and preventive measures to combat the disease’s spread. As cases surge, residents like Habimana and local health experts call for increased awareness and assistance from authorities to address the escalating health crisis.
