The National Crime Agency has warned of the growing danger of drug use in Britain, with a rise in deaths from synthetic opioids and increased global cocaine production. The agency highlighted the risks of nitazenes, a synthetic opioid responsible for 284 deaths since last year, emphasizing its potency and the potential for fatalities even with first-time use.
The NCA’s annual assessment identifies drugs, child sexual abuse, cybercrime, money laundering, and organized crime as areas of increasing harm in the UK. Drug-related deaths have risen by 60% in the past decade, with cannabis being the most consumed drug. The agency noted a concerning trend of individuals smuggling cannabis into the country via air passengers.
However, on a positive note, the threat level of firearms has decreased, with near-record low deaths and successful disruptions in the firearm supply chain. The NCA attributed this decline to societal attitudes, effective legislation, and law enforcement efforts. Despite some challenges in fraud and immigration crime, the agency remains vigilant in addressing these issues to ensure public safety.
