French President Emmanuel Macron honored 98-year-old Moroccan veteran Larbi Jawa with the title of Knight of the Legion of Honor in a ceremony at the Boulouris National Necropolis in Saint-Raphaël. Joined by fellow veteran Abdellah Jaber, both heroes were commended for their bravery in World War II and the Indochina conflict.
Jawa, originally from Khenifra, joined the military at just 18 and fought valiantly in Italy, earning a citation for his courage during the Battle of Monte Cassino. Despite sustaining severe injuries in the Indochina War, he continued to serve with dedication. Recognized by several heads of state, including Moroccan Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch, Jawa’s sacrifice and commitment were acknowledged during the commemoration attended by leaders paying tribute to the Allied forces.
After multiple tours of duty and promotions, Jawa retired in 1956 as a Sergeant, returning to his hometown as a celebrated veteran. His journey exemplifies unwavering valor and honor, making him a true symbol of heroism and sacrifice.
