Russia remains the top source of “coordinated inauthentic behavior” on Facebook and Instagram, with a focus on undermining Ukraine and its allies since the 2022 invasion.
As the US election approaches, Meta anticipates Russia-backed deception campaigns targeting political candidates who support Ukraine. Experts are concerned about the potential for an influx of disinformation through AI tools like ChatGPT and Dall-E. These tools can create images, videos, and fake news stories with ease, posing a significant threat to online discourse.
Meta’s approach to combating deception focuses on monitoring account behavior rather than just content. The company collaborates with other internet firms to share findings and coordinate a defense against misinformation. However, concerns remain about platforms like X (formerly Twitter) becoming breeding grounds for disinformation due to cuts in trust and safety teams and content moderation efforts.
