The Lagos State Chapter of the National Association of Nigeria Nurses and Midwives has strongly refuted recent claims by a media organization regarding healthcare professionals in Nigeria demanding bribes for services. The association, led by Chairperson Christianah Adeboboye, emphasized its dedication to upholding ethical standards and providing quality patient care.
A report from the National Bureau of Statistics, titled “Corruption in Nigeria: Patterns and Trends,” highlighted that only four per cent of Nigerians who interacted with healthcare professionals in 2022 were asked to pay a bribe. The NBS and UNODC report indicated that bribery requests were made for various reasons, such as expediting procedures or as a sign of appreciation.
Despite these findings, the NANNM Lagos State Chapter dismissed the report as unfounded and misleading, calling for a retraction and formal apology from the media organization. The association also assured the public that mechanisms are in place to monitor and regulate members to ensure compliance with nursing ethics.
With no known petitions of bribery against its members, the NANNM remains steadfast in its commitment to delivering excellent patient care with integrity. The association urged for the cessation of such harmful misinformation and reiterated its dedication to maintaining high ethical standards in nursing practices.
