The Wireless and Internet Service Providers Association of Pakistan reported a 30-40% decrease in internet speeds, prompting fears of businesses relocating. Major platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp were affected, leading to speculation about government firewalls monitoring users.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority denied the firewall accusations. Dawn.com contacted the PTA and is awaiting a response. The outage tracking site Downdetector showed PTCL, Zong, Nayatel, Fiberlink, Ufone, and Jazz as the most affected providers.
A Senate committee ordered the tech ministry to resolve the internet disruptions and social media access issues within two weeks. The committee addressed concerns from both the treasury and opposition, emphasizing the negative impact on businesses and demanding a report on the financial losses incurred.
