Exciting news from Hong Kong as the city celebrates the birth of twin giant panda cubs!
Ying Ying, the mother, broke records by becoming the oldest giant panda to successfully give birth for the first time at the age of 19. The male and female cubs arrived after a nearly five-month pregnancy, delighting visitors at Ocean Park.
Gifted to Hong Kong by Beijing in 2007, Ying Ying and the twins’ father Le Le successfully mated in March at the theme park. This rare birth is especially significant as it coincides with the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
The park’s veterinary teams and experts from the China Conservation and Research Centre for the Giant Panda are closely monitoring the mother and her cubs around the clock. With only an estimated 1,800 giant pandas left in the wild, every birth is crucial for the species’ survival.
In additional good news, China will send another pair of giant pandas to Hong Kong to mark the city’s 27th year under Chinese rule, continuing the efforts to protect this beloved species.
