A Greenland court ordered US-Canadian anti-whaling activist Paul Watson to remain in custody pending extradition to Japan, following accusations by Japan over a 2010 whaling confrontation.
Watson, known for his environmental activism with Sea Shepherd, was detained in Greenland in July and is awaiting a decision on his possible extradition.
The court ruled that Watson must be held until September 5, 2024, to ensure his presence for the extradition decision amid legal battles with Japan over the whaling charges.
Despite efforts by Watson and his legal team to prove his innocence, with video evidence challenging Japan’s claims, the court reportedly refused to consider the evidence during the hearing.
Watson’s detention in Greenland has garnered attention as a stance against Japan’s whaling practices, putting pressure on the country to address environmental concerns raised by activists.
