Families Struggle with Silence in Hunt for Missing Russian Conscripts

As the Armed Forces of Ukraine entered the Kursk region, reports emerged of conscript Russian soldiers facing casualties with no means for their families to find out their fate. The independent news site “iStories” highlighted the struggles of a non-governmental human rights organization (NGHRO) inundated with requests from desperate relatives seeking information on missing soldiers or preventing conscripts from being deployed to combat zones.

The NGHRO spokesperson outlined three main categories of help needed: locating missing sons, conscripts being forced back to the front lines, and new recruits facing deployment despite incomplete training. The families are left in the dark with no official channels for information, and the laws are manipulated to suit the ongoing military operation.

With an influx of requests mainly from parents of conscripts, the NGHRO faces an overwhelming task. Despite efforts to assist, the spokesperson acknowledges the challenges posed by the Russian military laws being bent for the sake of the “special military operation.” The situation underscores the drastic measures taken to bolster manpower, including sending even exempted individuals to the battleground.
