Colombia Debuts Latin America’s First A.I. Department

Colombia has made a landmark step in the intersection of education and technology by establishing the first artificial intelligence faculty in Latin America at the University of Caldas in Manizales. Set to welcome students next year, the faculty boasts state-of-the-art facilities to accommodate 1,228 students, including labs, classrooms, and computer labs.

Offering technical courses and master’s degrees in AI, the faculty aims to enroll 20 students per program initially and hopes to cater to over 5,000 students within two years. With a government investment of 55 billion Colombian pesos, the initiative is poised to elevate AI education in Colombia.

President Gustavo Petro highlighted the faculty’s pivotal role in driving economic and societal transformation through AI education. Additionally, plans for a microprocessor manufacturing facility in Manizales indicate broader ambitions to establish the city as a tech hub.

The establishment of the Faculty of Artificial Intelligence not only enhances Colombia’s educational landscape but also positions the country as a frontrunner in technological advancement within the region, signaling a strategic commitment to fostering talent and embracing technology for the future workforce in the digital age.
