Climate activists disrupt airport operations in Germany
Climate activists from the group Letzte Generation staged a protest at four airports in Germany by gluing themselves to the tarmac, causing brief disruptions to air traffic. The activists demanded that the German government commit to a global exit from oil, gas, and coal by 2030.
While the protest did not affect air operations at Berlin and Stuttgart, it did briefly halt flights at Nuremberg and Cologne Bonn airports. The interior minister, Nancy Faeser, condemned the actions as dangerous and warned of tougher penalties for airport intruders.
The activists, known for their eye-catching protests, have a history of staging disruptive demonstrations. In July, they caused traffic delays at Frankfurt Airport by gluing themselves to the tarmac. The recent protests resulted in the arrest of all eight participants.
The German cabinet has approved legislation that would impose stricter penalties on intruders who disrupt airport operations. If approved by politicians, the bill could lead to a two-year prison sentence for offenders, replacing the current system of fines.
