A United Nations team will investigate “atrocities” during the unrest that led to the downfall of Bangladesh’s former prime minister, Sheikh Hasina, last week, as announced by the country’s interim government on Thursday.
The team, to be sent by the UN, will focus on probing human rights violations during the Student Revolution in July and early August. Discussions on this matter took place between UN human rights chief Volker Turk and interim Bangladeshi leader Muhammad Yunus in a recent phone call.
The fact-finding mission aims to uncover “widespread human rights abuses” in Bangladesh. The unrest resulted in the ousting of Hasina, who faced allegations of mass detention and killings of political opponents during her 15-year rule. She sought refuge in India as student protests erupted in Dhaka.
