Armenia Fires at Azerbaijan’s Military Positions in Nakhchivan
Armenia has reportedly opened fire at Azerbaijan’s military positions in the autonomous Nakhchivan exclave, according to the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry. The incident occurred near the settlement of Ganza, located just 5 kilometers from the Armenian border. The Azerbaijani Army retaliated against the attack, which took place at 6:10 p.m. local time.
Armenia’s Defense Ministry denied the allegations, proposing the establishment of a bilateral mechanism for investigating cease-fire violations. Tensions between Baku and Yerevan have persisted since 1991 when the Armenian military occupied Karabakh, recognized as part of Azerbaijan. Most of the territory was reclaimed by Azerbaijan during a 2020 war, leading to a Russian-brokered peace agreement.
Last September, Azerbaijan established sovereignty in Karabakh following an “anti-terrorist operation”. The situation underscores the delicate balance in the region and the importance of diplomatic channels in preventing further escalation.
