Opposition parties in Kano are questioning the credibility of the Kano State Independent Electoral Commission (KANSIEC) ahead of local government elections. The All Progressives Congress (APC) and Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) criticized the high costs of nomination forms and expressed concerns about the independence of the commission.
Despite the challenges raised by opposition parties, KANSIEC chairman, Professor Sani Lawan Malumfashi, assured the parties of a free and fair election process. He emphasized the importance of adhering to guidelines and timelines for campaign activities to ensure a smooth electoral process.
However, APC and PRP remain skeptical about the leadership of KANSIEC and the high costs of nomination forms. They are prepared to legally challenge any discrepancies in the election process.
In response to the criticism, Professor Malumfashi reiterated his commitment to neutrality and transparency, emphasizing that external interference would not be tolerated. The upcoming council poll in Kano is scheduled for November 30, 2024, with campaign activities set to begin on September 6, 2024.
