The recent Pew Research Center survey sheds light on the evolving perceptions between the United States and Mexico, highlighting a notable shift in American attitudes towards their southern neighbor. Currently, 60% of Americans hold a negative view of Mexico, compared to 37% who express a positive perception. In contrast, 61% of Mexicans have a favorable stance towards the United States, while 33% do not.
The survey reflects the impact of former President Donald Trump’s anti-Mexico rhetoric on public opinion. Interestingly, there are significant variations in sentiment based on age and political affiliation. Younger Americans and Democrats tend to view Mexico more favorably, while older individuals and Republicans exhibit more negative attitudes.
Border control and irregular immigration
On the subject of border control and irregular immigration, Americans are more critical of their government’s handling of the situation than Mexicans. The survey shows that 83% of Americans believe the White House is performing poorly in addressing the influx of immigrants, while 52% of Mexicans think the Biden administration is not diligent enough on the issue.
Joe Biden and Donald Trump
In terms of leadership, Mexicans express little confidence in President Biden, but still overwhelmingly reject Trump. The survey data was collected prior to Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race.
