Venezuela’s military backs Maduro: ‘Regime has military support’ | Global

The military leadership in Venezuela has sided with President Nicolás Maduro amidst accusations of electoral fraud in the recent presidential elections. While the opposition and the international community are pressing for transparency in the election results, the high command of the armed forces has pledged their unwavering loyalty to Maduro.

The opposition, led by María Corina Machado, is urging the military not to suppress protests alleging election irregularities. They are also calling for a review of the amassed tally sheets showing a significant victory for the opposition candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, over Maduro. However, the Attorney General’s Office has initiated a criminal investigation against Machado and González for allegedly inciting disobedience.

The military’s support for Maduro dates back to the regime of Hugo Chávez and has only strengthened over the years, with key military personnel holding influential positions in government-controlled sectors. The allocation of power and resources to the military has further solidified their allegiance to the current administration, despite international sanctions and public outcry.

The situation in Venezuela remains tense as the military plays a crucial role in upholding Maduro’s regime, leading to widespread concerns about democratic norms and the rule of law in the country.
