Ukraine has made significant advances into Russia’s Kursk region, now controlling 74 settlements following a surprise cross-border incursion. Ukrainian forces entered Russia last Tuesday, marking the largest attack by a foreign army on Russian soil since World War II. President Zelenskyy, in a video call with his military chief, reported troops advancing up to three kilometers and capturing 40 square kilometers of territory. The incursion has forced over 120,000 Russians to flee their homes.
Joe Biden commented on the situation, stating it poses a dilemma for Putin. Russia’s defense ministry reported repelling Ukrainian assaults but Ukraine claims it will not hold Russian territory and seeks a “just peace.” Ukraine’s actions are defended as legitimate, with an offer to stop raids if Moscow agrees to restore peace. The offensive into Kursk region, catching Russia off guard, is the largest since the invasion earlier in the year.
The intensity of the fighting is evident at the border crossing, with toppled fortifications and captured Russian soldiers. Ukrainian servicemen describe capturing the area and Russian forces fleeing amidst battles. Putin vows to dislodge Ukrainian troops and accuses Ukraine of attempting to destabilize Russian society.
