Thai PM Srettha Thavisin Ousted by Constitutional Court
In a stunning ruling, the Thai Constitutional Court has declared Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to have “grossly breached ethics” with a controversial cabinet appointment. This decision has led to the need for the parliament to convene and select a new leader.
A group of senators appointed by the former military government initiated the lawsuit against Srettha, resulting in a vote of five to four in favor of his ouster. The controversy stemmed from the appointment of a minister with a criminal conviction, leading to charges of ethical violations.
This political upheaval has further deepened Thailand’s political uncertainty, as Srettha’s removal puts the Cabinet in a caretaker role. Potential candidates for the new Prime Minister position include Paetongtarn Shinawatra and Chaikasem Nitisiri.
