Despite the absence of the Sudanese government, U.S.-sponsored ceasefire talks to end the brutal conflict in Sudan began in Switzerland. The conflict, ongoing since April 2023, is between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces.
The talks, co-hosted by Saudi Arabia and the U.S., aim to address one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. While the Rapid Support Forces are participating, the Sudanese armed forces are hesitant.
The U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan, Tom Perriello, urged the Sudanese government to take advantage of the opportunity for peace. The talks are scheduled to last up to 10 days and involve various international partners.
However, tensions remain as the Sudanese government rejected new observers like the United Arab Emirates, which they believe supports the Rapid Support Forces. The ceasefire talks are crucial in bringing an end to the devastating conflict in Sudan.
