Amidst deadly protests in reaction to his controversial re-election in Venezuela, President Nicolas Maduro has called for a tough response from the state. The protests, sparked by claims of electoral fraud, have resulted in 25 deaths and a brutal crackdown by security forces.
Maduro, pushing for “harsh justice” against the violence, blames opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia and Maria Corina Machado for the unrest. Both Urrutia and Machado are currently in hiding, fearing for their lives.
During a session of the Defense Council, Maduro urged state institutions to act swiftly and decisively against crime and violence, dubbing it an “iron fist” approach. The opposition continues to dispute the election results and demand accountability.
The situation remains tense in Venezuela, with growing concerns about the government’s authoritarian tactics and the citizens’ right to peaceful protest.
