INEC chief urges vigilance ahead of Edo, Ondo polls

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, has urged security agencies to remain vigilant for the upcoming Edo and Ondo governorship elections. He emphasized the importance of protecting election materials and personnel while adhering to electoral rules.

Yakubu expressed gratitude to security forces for their support in recent electoral activities, highlighting concerns about potential disruptions by armed actors. He also called for peaceful campaigns by political parties and their supporters to ensure peaceful elections.

Furthermore, Yakubu announced upcoming bye-elections in several states and released timetables for filling vacancies. The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, issued a stern warning against any attempts to disrupt the elections, emphasizing the government’s commitment to peaceful and credible polls.

With 17 political parties fielding candidates in both states and a total of 4,682,086 voters, the stage is set for critical electoral processes in Edo and Ondo state.
