In an effort to reduce the number of violent encounters between humans and wild elephants in Assam, India, the state has launched a new mobile app called HaatiApp. Developed by the Assam-based conservation society Aaranyak, the app tracks the movements of wild elephant herds and warns users if they come close to a herd, helping to prevent potential collisions.
Residents can also use the app to report elephant sightings, injuries, and deaths, as well as any crop or property damages caused by the elephants. Additionally, there is a form on the app that victims can use to seek compensation from government entities for any losses incurred.
According to Aaranyak, human-elephant conflicts in Assam have resulted in over 200 elephant deaths and 400 human deaths from 2017 to 2022. The HaatiApp aims to lower these numbers by providing real-time information and alerts to residents, helping to create a safer environment for both humans and elephants in the region.
