Morocco’s Ambassador to the UN Responds to Algeria’s Provocative Statements
Morocco’s permanent representative to the UN, Ambassador Omar Hilale, recently sent a strong response letter to the President and members of the Security Council following the provocative remarks made by the Secretary General of the ministry of Foreign Affairs of Algeria regarding the Moroccan Sahara issue during a meeting of the Council.
In his letter, Hilale highlighted the misleading statements made by the Algerian delegate, criticizing their obsession with Moroccan-phobia and the Moroccan Sahara. He noted that the Algerian representative diverted from the main agenda of the Security Council debate held under the chairmanship of Mr. Julius Maada Bio, President of Sierra Leone.
Hilale emphasized that the issue of the Moroccan Sahara is a matter of territorial integrity and national unity for Morocco, not a decolonization issue as claimed by Algeria. He emphasized the historical ties of the Sahara region to Morocco and the country’s commitment to finding a peaceful and lasting solution through the UN framework.
Furthermore, Hilale addressed Algeria’s double standards regarding self-determination, pointing out the hypocrisy in their stance on the issue. He also highlighted Morocco’s significant investments in the development of the Sahara region, transforming it into a model of regional development.
In conclusion, Hilale expressed hope that Algeria would prioritize the interests of the African continent during its mandate on the Security Council. The letter sent by Ambassador Hilale will be officially documented by the UN Security Council.
